Educate to Elevate
Educating the child group of semi-skilled and unskilled workers in slum habitation is an urgent requirement. Slums in India have a low educational level. Various evaluations of slum regions suggest that slightly more than half of the children attend school. It also states that slum children have a significant over-age and dropout rate. Overage is frequently the result of late enrolment in school. Shapar is an industrial area with a range of industries. People from other parts of India migrate to the region in search of employment. This flow of labour had caused growth in slums. Lack of access to necessities has further deteriorated the living conditions. Children constitute 30% of the slum population in Shapar’s two areas Siddharth Nagar and Meldi Maata Region. To reach out to out-of-school and in schoolchildren residing in a slum area of shapar the foundation is running community classes.
